Why Android and Windows Phone Devices DO Need More RAM!

I'm pretty sure this conversation will be familiar to most of you.
You: "My new XYZ phone/tablet has 2 gigs of RAM. How much does your iPhone/iPad have?"
Random friend: "What are you going to do with 2 gigs of RAM on your mobile device?"
And then, no matter how much you try to explain them, they just sit there, understanding nothing, like typical Apple users.

Well, now you have an answer.

Most of the Android and Windows Phone devices come with 1080p (1920x1080) displays and 2 GB RAM nowadays. But, some phones like Vivo Xplay 3S, LG G3 and Oppo Find 7 come with 2K (2560x1440) displays. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to make this deduction that all phones with 2K displays come with 3 GB RAM. Do you see where I'm going with this?

More pixels means more RAM required by the GPU. The Nexus 10 was announced in 2012 and was pretty much the first mobile device to feature a resolution of 2560x1440. I remember being disappointed that the Google event was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy but just watching the specs of the Nexus 10 more than made up for it! It boasted of a Cortex-A15 dual core processor, 2 GB RAM and a 2K display. Those specs rock even today!

When I first booted my Nexus 10, I was surprised that it showed a total of only 1.5 GB RAM. After the 4.2.2 OTA update, it went down to 1.1 GB! I was mad. But, then I read somewhere on XDA that the GPU requires DEDICATED 900 MB of RAM for the enormous resolution.

The iPhone 5S has a resolution of 1136x640 and 1 GB DDR2 RAM. Less pixels on iPhone means less RAM required. It also has a little to do with the manufacturer bloat of Android devices but I am considering only stock Android/Google Play Edition devices here.

And this is the exact same reason why the Moto G and Moto E can run smoothly with 1 GB RAM. I hope now you understand why Android phones need more RAM and can shut your iCrap friends as well! :P

Microsoft Announces the 12", 799$ Surface Pro 3

When Microsoft announced it had an event today, everybody was expecting a smaller, Surface Mini. But, the company had other plans. They announced the Surface Pro 3 which features a 12" screen and is primarily targeted to replace your laptop. Also, either Microsoft did a pretty good job to keep the tablet off the internet or the employees of Microsoft are very loyal, because there wasn't even a single leak about the Surface Pro 3. Kudos to Microsoft for that.

The device features a 12-inch screen and kickstand, and supports a stylus. The Surface Pro 3 features an Intel Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processor to boost its performance compared to the previous Microsoft slate. The device features a 12-inch screen and kickstand, and supports a stylus. In addition to this, the tablet comes with support for USB 3.0 and Microsoft's popular Type Covers in multiple colors.

The new tablet can be rested at multiple angles, courtesy of a new "Full Friction Multi-postion Kickstand". This kickstand can extend all the way up to 150 degrees, which is almost flat. And of course, this translates to a better stylus writing experience. Which brings me to the next point, the stylus.

The stylus is drastically improved over the previous one. The Surface Pro 3 boasts a pressure sensitive screen along with a dedicated key on the pen to open OneNote. If your camera is open, double-clicking on the pen's button will capture the image in OneNote, where you can mark it up and save it to the cloud.

Microsoft also announced the new touch and type covers for the Surface Pro 3, including a docking station. The new Surface Pro 3 Type Cover includes a redesigned trackpad that's 68 percent larger with 70 percent reduced friction and a new hinged cover that magnetically seals to the screen, to allow the cover to adjust to whatever angle you position the tablet using the full friction kickstand.

Key features highlighted by Microsoft include:
  • 12" screen with resolution of 2160 x 1440. Pixel density: 216 pixels per inch.
  • Multi-position kickstand.
  • 45% louder speaker.
  • Weight: 800 gms. Thickness: 9.1 mm.
  • Pressure sensitive stylus.
  • USB 3.0 port.
  • New touch and type covers.

Xiaomi Mi Pad with killer specs announced!

Fast. Xiaomi does everything fast.

They sell phones fast. They develop blazing fast devices. Its Tegra 4-powered Mi3 was the world’s fastest phone at launch. They’re growing fast, too: Xiaomi is now one of the world’s largest smartphone vendors.

And now, they’re the first to build a tablet with Nvidia's unbelievably fast, Tegra K1 mobile processor.

Launched in Beijing, the Mi Pad features a 7.9-inch display with 2048x1536 resolution which calculates to a whooping pixel density of 324 ppi. Its 6700 mAh battery means its good for up to 1300 hours of standby time, 86 hours of music playback, or 11 hours of video streaming. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB, or 64 GB on-board memory – and a microSD slot for expandable storage. It also sports a couple of 8 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras (not that I care :P).

This isn’t the first time that Nvidia and Xiaomi worked together. Last year, Nvidia partnered with Xiaomi on its flagship Mi3 smartphone – the first Tegra 4 phone. Xiaomi sold 100,000 of them in under 90 seconds last October.

This year, Xiaomi is moving into tablets.Inside the Mi Pad: the 192 core mobile processor, Tegra K1. The ‘K’ in K1 stands for Kepler. That’s the parallel processing GPU architecture found in the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

As a result, Mi Pad offers visual and parallel computing capabilities never seen in mobile devices before. Tegra K1 supports the most advanced graphics technologies – including OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.1, and DX12.

Those are the same standards used in PCs and next-gen consoles. That means developers can bring the latest games to mobile devices. Tegra K1 already runs Unreal Engine 4, the world’s most advanced game engine. So, games with intense graphics, like Trine 2, play flawlessly.

Sadly, the Mi Pad will be available in China starting in June as an open beta – select fans will get the option to go hands-on with pre-production units. It will retail for around $240 (16 GB) and $270 (64 GB)

HTC One M8's younger brother is here!

After the successful launch of the One M8, HTC has announced the HTC One Mini 2 (better name than M4 :P) in London today. The One Mini 2 sports a familiar design with a smaller, 4.5" display and a far better 13 MP camera.

The HTC One Mini 2 sticks with the winner design of the M8

It retains the signature Boomsound speakers from it's older sibling. Although, they could've made the bezel smaller if they wanted on-screen buttons. Three color options are available: Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold.

The top and bottom offer the similar soft touch plastic of the M8

The biggest improvement from the M8 in my opinion is the camera. HTC got rid of the useless Duo camera and included a 13 MP f/2.2 BSI sensor. The One Mini 2 is 10.6 mm thick which you have to expect if the screen size is made smaller.

The back has the similar brushed metal texture with the metal enveloping the phone from the sides. Android 4.4 Kitkat is included out of the box with Sense 6. The One Mini 2 makes its debut across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia in June. No details about a US release are being divulged yet.

HTC One Mini 2 specifications

Display4.5-inch Super LCD 3, Gorilla Glass 3, 1280 x 720, 326 ppi
ProcessorQuad-core Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz, Adreno 305 GPU
RAM1GB
Storage16GB, microSD card slot, up to 128GB
Camera13MP rear, BSI sensor, f/2.2
5MP front, BSI sensor, Full HD recording
Battery2,100 mAh
ConnectivityGPS/GLONASS, microUSB 2.0, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
Networks3G/WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps

LTE EMEA Band 3, 7, 8, 20
LTE Asia Band 1, 3, 7, 8, 28
SoftwareAndroid 4.4 KitKat, HTC Sense 6, BlinkFeed
Dimensions137.43 x 65.04 x 10.6 mm
137 grams
ColorsGunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver, Amber Gold
The processor included is the midrange offering by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 400. The RAM of the One Mini 2, which is lowered to 1 GB, and the 720p resolution suggest a cheaper price range.

All in all, the HTC One Mini 2 should be a good phone if it is priced between 300-400$ off contract, which I hardly think so will be the case. I think that HTC is just using the "One" branding to sell a mid range phone which I am sure will be overpriced considering the specs.

Motorola Moto E Announced

Today Motorola has announced a new low end Android device targeted mainly for the Indian market. If you have any expectations for this phone, then forget it. The Moto E is the kind of phone which you can give your grandparents as a cheap and durable but easy to use phone.

The Moto E is similar in looks to the Moto G.

Features:

The Moto E has lesser specs than that of the G, with a 4.3-inch, 960 x 540 display (covered by Gorilla Glass 3 and an anti-smudge coating), 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (with a microSD slot), a 1,980 mAh  Li-ion battery and a 5-megapixel main camera with no LED flash.

The pixel density works out to be about 256 ppi which is good enough considering the price. Motorola has managed to ship the phone with Android 4.4 Kitkat out of the box and promises that the Moto E will receive all future updates of Android. Also, the UI looks to be very close to stock with the exception of some Motorola features/apps.

Pricing:

As you would expect, it is very competitively priced at 7000 Rs(~117$) in India, $129 in the US and £89 in the UK. Surprisingly, the Moto E is the first device ever to be cheaper in India than in other countries and even with a dual sim variant!

Official Video:

Bonus Easter Egg by Motorola in this video. Pause at 0:40 and you can read "Android 4.4.3"! But when? :P

Note: The Moto E is available in India exclusively on flipkart.com from 14th May 2014 midnight. If you want to buy a cheap phone (even as a spare one), it is going to sell like hot pancakes, so be ready! Also, flipkart is offering 50% off on Moto E covers on the launch day.

Conclusion:

During the on-stage announcement, Motorola called out the Galaxy S4 for being slower than the E in basic metrics like time to return to the homescreen from within an app. It's obviously not as capable as the S4 in terms of raw power, but if we've learnt anything from the Moto G, it's that Motorola knows how to get the best of mediocre components.

The Moto E is the perfect first phone for your son/daughter studying in primary or your old father/ grandfather. Don't expect anything out of the camera, it just does the basics right.

Have we reached tech saturation or are we expecting too much?

Everytime, the same thing happens. A manufacturer announces it's newest flagship and the tech world goes gaga for that particular device, until, it is slowly forgotten and thrown into the tech oblivion.

HTC announced it's new flaship, the HTC One M8 in March and to be honest, I was yawning during the keynote. I mean, if I can get the old HTC One for even 3/4th the price of the new one, I would not think for even one second. I think that HTC hyped the phone too much on YouTube and Twitter and raised people's expectations far from what the M8 could actually deliver. You can read my overview of the HTC One M8 here.

HTC's newest flagship. the One M8, compared to it's predecessor

The case is similar even with the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and many more flagships of leading manufacturers who seem to just refine their last year's phone with a newer processor, a higher quality camera and in a little bigger chassis.

Samsung Galaxy S5 and S4

Don't get me wrong, I think they are all great phones but as compared to one year old models, they are only a fraction better. According to me, Nexus 6(?) > Sony Xperia Z2 > Oppo Find 7 > Samsung Galaxy S5  > Oneplus One > HTC M8 >>> iPhone 6(:P).

The beauties of the Android world: Sony Xperia Z1 and Z2

These facts make us wonder whether we have reached saturation or our limit of innovation. The fact is that, as we are going forward in time the changes in phones become more and more subtle. You could easily tell between a Samsung Galaxy S3 and a S4 but the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4 look almost identical. Also, I think that the fact that the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 have lesser pixel density than last year's models support my point.

The purpoted flagship-killer of the newly found Chinese manufacturer, Oneplus

So... What does this conclude? We do have great new and innovative technology like Phoneblocks, Moto 360, Google Glass and many more devices. But, the problem is that we really have achieved too much in the recent years and that's why we don't get surprised by anything nowadays. The HTC One M8 and the Oneplus One are the perfect examples for hyping a device out of it's abilities. No doubt that they are both beatiful phones but they just couldn't live up to the hype. But we can still count on Google and the next Nexus manufacturer that we will again be awed by the it's brilliance. A few months ago, I told my co-writer, +Jay Shah, that the perfect phone for me would be built by HTC, have the software of Google and hand-picked features from Samsung and Motorola!

With all this, there is one thing we know that Android power users like me can always count on ROM makers like +CyanogenMod  and +Paranoid Android that they will come up with something awesome!

1+1=1 ?

The time comes to smash the past !!

Oneplus wants it's users to forget to compromise

The most awaited gadget in the smartphone category lies in front of the tech-world today with a shocking price and classy specifications. Oneplus established itself as a top notch Chinese smartphone brand in December 2013 after the core team became from the premium smartphone brand Oppo. It, in a way challenged the top smartphone maker giants that it will unveil a phone which will be it's own competitor, standing ahead in the line of smartphones. And a week and a half ago the beast was unleashed by the newly established old competitors.

The Oneplus One is the first flagship of Oneplus which has some amazing specs. It was unveiled on the 25th of April 2014 with killer features. The One runs entirely on a custom build of Cyanogenmod (named CM 11S) which is an open source replacement for smartphones and tablet computers based on the Android operating mobile system. It is packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.5GHz Quad-core CPUs making it fast. It's 3 GB of RAM allows flawless multitasking of the most formidable apps. It offers Global 4G LTE connectivity with a blazing fast and speedy connectivity, maybe faster than THE FLASH :P.

The 13 MP Shooter promises a high class picture quality

It has the 13 Megapixel view of Sony EXMOR IMX214 making it a stunning capturer for photographers and quick snappers. It swanks 6 physical lenses and a dual flashlight supporting it anywhere even in low-light conditions. Featuring a massive 5 Megapixel Front-facing camera emerges as a competitive feature which bashes the others in its competition.

The phone also features a huge 3100 mAh battery

It loads itself up with a 3100 mAh battery with an attractive red color with the Oneplus logo in white. The color seems extra appealing and so does it's battery life. The energy efficient display features  CABC (Content Adaptive Brightness Control) and DRAM (Display RAM) that  adjusts between dynamic and static contents on the screen with the level of backlight. Thus it will last a day long even if the usage is at it's peak.
Talking about voice recognition and noise cancellation, three microphones, one at the back besides the camera, second a little distance away from the headphone jack and the third besides the speakers, work together to identify the voice and filter the background noise.

Different gestures drawn on the screen will launch preferred apps and double tapping will awake your device and even wet hands are compatible with the sleek and a bit raised screen. There is also a choice between on screen and capacitive keys which offers the user with a dual operating experience.

In all this is a device packed with loads of features and customizations which is available for just 1$ with the terms and conditions as told. The 16G version is available for 299$ with a silk white back whereas the 64G version has a sandstone back as default. You can also change the removable back cover, as different back covers have been made available like wood, denim, etc. to choose from.

Back cover varieties

The beautifully crafted beast also features Miracast, Bluetooth 4.0, Power off, GPS,GLONASS, Gyroscope, NFC, USB OTG, Compass and a Proximity Sensor.

After announcing the phone Oneplus announced a rather meaningless contest in which if you smashed your current smartphone and sent a picture, they would give a Oneplus One for free. But soon, they realized their mistake and now they will just give you a One if you sent (donated) them your current flagship phone.

This is a very economic and fully loaded premium phone by Oneplus which I think has come up with something awesome and I hope to see it rock and roll. I look forward for something more fantastic after this.
Maybe Oneplus Two can come up :P. Till then let's wait and watch...

Best Online April Fool's Jokes!

When it's April 1st, you kind of know not to believe everything you see online. Nowadays, tech companies have a lot of fun besides innovating awesome new technology. And this year, mostly all major companies are involved from a legacy I believe was created by Google. Google has always been an awesome company which can be dubbed as a "Community of Geeks" (if it isn't offensive :P) But this year was really special because even sites like The Pirate Bay were involved. Anyways, here is a list of all pranks that I found. Btw, I will keep updating this list whenever I find new ones.

Google Maps: Google release an update to Google Maps yesterday in which when you update the app, open it, press on the search bar and press start, it takes you to a virtual world in which Pokemons are hidden everywhere and the first person to collect them all wins! They also released a pretty hilarious video.

Samsung Fingers: Samsung was the first one to mock wearable devices this year and this was probably the most detailed prank in the history of April Fool's day including specifications and everything. See whole article here.

HTC Gluuve: HTC was quick to follow in the footsteps of Samsung (didn't see that coming XP)  and mocked a wearable HTC M8 lookalike with BoomSound and a camera. Read the full article here.

PA Hover: Perhaps this April Fool's joke hurt me the most. Paranoid Android, a custom ROM maker, were teasing Hover, a remake of Halo(floating window feature) and I was super happy to know they finally announced it. But it was just another prank :( The Google+ post is here.

Youtube Trends: Almost every department of Google have their own prank so who can stop YouTube? In  a released video, YouTube "revealed" every viral video ever was meticulously crafted by the YouTube staff and they even predicted the future viral videos of 2014.
Extra tip: If you search "clocking" on YouTube, you will see a stick figure clock! (See the video below if you don't know what clocking means)

XDA Boots: XDA is another geek community who always have fun while making awesome new ROMs. Today, XDA announced "Boot" which allows any user to request to 'boot' their account which basically means they won't be able to access it for the specified duration of time. Full article here.

Nokia 3310: The Nokia 3310 is one of the most famous "non-smart" phones ever. It is speculated that Chuck Norris once dropped his Nokia 3310 and it caused an earthquake in Haiti :P Anyways, the only thing that held back the 3310 was it's camera. But this is no longer. Nokia officially announced that they will be re-releasing the 3310 with a 41 MP pureview camera!! Read full article here.

Google Chrome emoji: The Chrome department of Google release an update to the Play Store and Apple App Store with a simple slogan, "Emojify the Web". After installing the update, you can see in the menu, an option to "Translate to Emojis", clicking which, will try to translate the text into Emojis! If you are reading this on Chrome browser on you iPhone or Android device, tell me what things in this article are Emojified in the comments section! Watch the full video here.

Oppo O lenses: Oppo is desperately trying to join the "Elite" smartphone manufacturers of the world and in my opinion, it is succeeding! When the engineers at Oppo aren't designing a next-gen 2K display, they design O-lenses! O-lenses are smart contact lenses that everybody dreams of! Read full article here.

Sony power food: This prank is pretty simple. The people at Sony have discovered a new enzyme called Voltaic enzyme. This enzyme can convert food fats directly to power and you can be saved at crucial times!

Google Magic Hand: This prank comes from the Japan division of Google. The Google Japanese input keyboard has a swipe to type feature and this "magic hand" is basically a joystick which can make it easier for touch controls. The video also contains other little jokes like wearing your magic hand as a tie!
Note: Turn on the Closed Captioning in English as the video is in Japanese.

Motorola Boot animation: The work environment at Motorola has become very similar to Google after it's acquisition and take over by Lenovo. A few days ago, it was confirmed that Google had started asking manufacturers to brand boot animations with a specific "Powered by Android" lockup as part of Google's Mobile Services license. Samsung's Galaxy S5 and HTC's new One M8 both carry the branding, and today Motorola's Moto X and Moto G have joined the party, but Motorola has something else in store as well - a new boot animation just in time for April Fools Day. The animation features a UFO, bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster, all exposed by Motorola's spotlight. Check out the full sequence below.

The Pirate Bay: The Torrent search giant announced that they deleted all torrents and now we can see, feel and hear Pirate Bay. Read full article here.

Virgin Mobile Canada: Smart Shoes were the only thing left and Virgin Mobile Canada has made it a reality in the form of a April fool's prank. There are two versions of this "smartshoe": Smartsneak and Smartletto. Read full article here.

Mycolorscreen's MyColorLife: Mycolorscreen is the best Android homescreen theming sites and today they released a video stating that from now on, they will also help in "theming" your home, choosing wallpapers, locks etc. If you own an Android device, I personally recommend you to go to Mycolorscreen for theming your device!

Chromecast for squirrels: Squirrels need entertainment as well, don't they? That's why Google decided to make chromecast in a way that is very easy for squirrels to watch shows like "Squirrels got Talent" on their TV from the internet!

Google+ Auto Awesome David Hasselhoff: Google+'s Auto Awesome feature is really awesome and for today, the Baywatch star can photobomb into any of your photos!

Franco Kernel updater: Okay, this is another one of those Android power user kind of things. The Franco Kernel is a kernel for Nexus devices that makes your device feel super fast and smooth. There is also an app on the Play Store called the Franco Kernel Updater which helps you to easily update your kernel whenever a new version is available and the money can also help +Francisco Franco to develop. Franco posted on Google+ today that the app is free from today. But after checking the Play Store, I got sad. Well played Franco, well played. :P

Swiftkey Flow Hard: This is the only April Fool's prank that is quite awesome and actually works! Swiftkey is a very famous aftermarket Android keyboard and I think it recently made an appearance in iOS as well. Fli-Fy, a micro-router, delivers free Wi-Fi and is able to connect thousands of devices with superfast download speed by enabling Micro-routers on pigeons.
